Zusammenfassung:According to current research, mental health issues are the leading health problem for Canadian children. Surveys also indicate that fewer than 25% of children are receiving care (Waddell, McEwan, Shepherd, Offord, & Hua, 2005); thus, schools play a key role in assessment, access to services, and possible referral to appropriate outside support systems. Currently in British Columbia schools, untrained individuals are hired into counselling positions due to the lack of qualified personnel. Our discussion focuses on this issue, the history and importance of certification and regulation of school counsellors, and our recommendations for actions that may assist in ensuring the welfare of children and families within the school system.
