McLendon) describes the effects on ABE of the first full year of funding for the Workforce Investment Act and the publication of "From the Margins to the Mainstream". "The Rise of the Adult Education and Literacy System in the United States: 1600-2000" (Thomas G. Sticht) describes the federal government's involvement in adult literacy from Colonial America to the present. "Adults with Learning Disabilities: A Review of the Literature" (Mary Ann Corley, Juliana M. Taymans) assesses current practices and makes suggestions to improve services. "Literacy Assessment in Adult Basic Education" (John Kruidenier) describes why and how ABE programs assess literacy and suggests how the process might be improved. "The Inclusion of Numeracy in Adult Basic Education" (Dave Tout, Mary Jane Schmitt) describes trends, best practices, and research in adult and K-12 numeracy education in the United States and several other countries. "Professionalization and Certification for Teachers in Adult Basic Education" (John P.
