Zusammenfassung:The microterminal/microfiche (MT/MF) system described is part of a continuing effort to investigate the feasibility of a low-cost, stand-alone device for the delivery of the testing component of technical training in a computer-based instructional (CBI) environment. A description of the hardware for the system includes the basic microterminal configuration, component modifications, and MT/MF interface description and operation. The development of software for progression testing support and microfiche control is also described. The MT/MF was evaluated using three experimental groups and one control group in a Precision Measuring Equipment Course at Lowry AFB. Three major areas of concern were evaluated: (1) whether the use of the microterminal had a positive effect on test-taking behavior, (2) whether the MT/MF system would have an inhibiting effect on student performance reflected in either block score or test taking time, and (3) the effect of student attitudes. The findings indicate that the microterminal is a preferred technology for the recording of answers to test items in a CBI environment, and that the use of microfiche for the presentation of test items does not impose any problems for students in terms of their ability to perform. Results are reported with supporting tables and questionnaire summaries. (CHC)
