The flash-spinning is accomplished by passing the mixture from a zone of higher pressure into one of a pressure of at most 600 mm. Hg. so that substantially all the solvent evaporates precipitating the polymer as a fibrous mass. The low pressure zone is in direct communication with a disc refiner, so that the fibrous mass is refined at a pressure which is also below 600 mm. Hg. A non-solvent such as water is optionally present in the original mixture and a hydrophilic water-dispersing agent such as polyvinyl alcohol is preferably also included. The use of polyethylene and polypropylene is exemplified.
