IMPROVEMENTS TO THE USE OF LIME IN SUCRATE FACTORY

Chalk is used more economically for the desugaring of dilute molasses by first adding, to the molasses, chalk of low desugaring efficiency and after the formation of the insoluble sugar-chalk combination, adding chalk of a higher efficiency. Pref. chalk of low efficiency is added to the molasses to give a ppte in the cold, of sugar-chalk combination, the molasses are decanted to leave the uncombined chalk, and then chalk of a higher efficiency is added to complete the pptn. The process may be carried out continuously and reduces the amount of higher efficiency chalk used, and therefore reduces cost.
