The invention relates to an underwater excavation apparatus and to a method for excavating ground material, having an immersible working platform which can be placed on the bed of a body of water, a removal device for removing ground material from the bed of the body of water, an adjustment device for adjusting and introducing the removal device into the bed of the body of water, and a conveying line for conveying ground material removed away from the removal device. According to the invention, a receptacle for a conveying container is formed on the working platform, the conveying container is mounted and held detachably in the receptacle, the conveying line opens into the conveying container, ground material removed can be accommodated in the conveying container, and a separating device is provided in the conveying container.
