Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to an escalator with a step belt or to a moving walkway with a plate belt. The step belt or plate belt has a link chain which contains engagement points arranged in succession at theoretically equal engagement spacings. The escalator or moving walkway has a first deflecting region and a second deflecting region with chainwheels. The link chain is arranged to circulate between the deflecting regions and the engagement points engage in tooth gaps of the chainwheels. The chainwheels have a pitch circle with a pitch which is referred to the tooth gaps and corresponds with half an engagement spacing of the link chain.
