Procédé pour préparer des 3,7-dialkylxanthines de formule (I), où R1 et R2 sont des groupes alkyle C1-C4, par réaction de 4-aminoimidazole-carboxamide-(5) de formule (II) avec un cyanate de métal alcalin dans une solution aqueuse à un pH compris entre 3 et 5, suivie d'une cyclisation, à un pH compris entre 8 et 14, du dérivé urée résultant.
