More specifically, it relates to electrochromic polycyclic compounds comprising a five, six or seven-membered ring, wherein said polycyclic compounds contain at least two nitrogen atoms in their cyclic central core. It also relates to the use of these compounds as a variable transmittance medium for the manufacture of an optical article, such as an ophthalmic lens. L'invention concerne un groupe de nouveaux composés électrochromiques. Plus spécifiquement, l'invention concerne des composés polycycliques électrochromiques comprenant un cycle à cinq, six ou sept chaînons, lesdits composés polycycliques contenant au moins deux atomes d'azote dans leur noyau central cyclique. L'invention concerne également l'utilisation de ces composés en tant que milieu à transmittance variable pour la fabrication d'un article optique, tel qu'une lentille ophtalmique.
