THERMAL HEATING ASSEMBLY FOR A SEAL PLATE

A jaw member for use with a surgical instrument for sealing tissue includes a thermal heating assembly having an outer insulator made from an electrically and thermally insulative material, a thermal heating element that connects to an energy source and that is disposed atop the outer insulator, and an inner insulator made from an electrically insulative and thermally conductive material that is disposed atop the thermal heating element. A seal plate having a tissue engaging surface includes a flange depending from a periphery thereof that defines a cavity therein configured to operably receive the thermal assembly in abutting relation therewith such that selective activation of the thermal heating element via the energy source heats the inner insulator which, in turn, heats the seal plate to seal the tissue.
