A feeding system for feeding animals, in particular cattle, comprises an autonomous feeding device with a holder for receiving a batch of feed. The holder has a maximum feed load. A feed quantity measuring device measures the quantity of feed which is available for consumption by the animals at feeding places. A control system determines at a first moment a feed requirement of the feeding places on the basis of a feeding criterion and the measured quantity of feed at the feeding places. The control system selects a first feeding place with a feed requirement. Then the control system determines a required feed quantity which is equal to a first feed quantity determined for the first feeding place, and one or more further feed quantities determined for one or more further feeding places selected by the control system from the feeding places with a feed requirement, if said further feed quantities can be added to the first feed quantity without exceeding the maximum feed load. If the required feed quantity is smaller than a threshold value for a minimum feed load, the control system adds to the required feed quantity one or more additional feed quantities which are intended for one or more additional feeding places selected by the control system from the feeding places which do not yet have a feed requirement at the first moment. The control system determines the additional feeding places such that the feed quantity to be loaded is equal to or greater than the threshold value for the minimum feed load.
