The present invention addresses the problem of providing a folding device (1) that, when folding a sheet (S) while retaining the same on a conveyance path, makes it possible to properly perform folding processing without a folding operation being hindered by a roller (19) that conveys the sheet (S). As the solution, the folding device (1) comprises: a conveyance part (2) provided with the roller (19) that sandwiches and conveys the sheet (S); and a folding part (7) that folds the sheet (S) conveyed by the conveyance part (2). The folding part (7) is provided with a retaining part (71) that retains the sheet (S) on a conveyance path, and a proximity part (72) that brings a folding piece of the sheet (S) in proximity to an opposing position of a retaining piece of the sheet (S) retained by the retaining part (71). The conveyance part (2) is provided with a retracting part (39) that retracts the roller (19) from a conveyance path (20) when the sheet (S) is folded by the folding part (7).
