Selon un mode de réalisation de la présente invention, un procédé dépolymérise des déchets de polyester au moyen d'une réaction en plusieurs étapes, une dernière réaction étant effectuée à basse température, et l'échange d'ions, etc. étant en outre mis en œuvre, ce qui permet d'obtenir du téréphtalate de bis(2-hydroxyéthyl) recyclé de haute pureté et de qualité élevée ayant une génération réduite d'impuretés et d'oligomères dérivés de diéthylène glycol.
