The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of allopurinol, febuxostat, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient for preventing or treating cardiovascular disease, in which the composition is administered to a subject having a blood uric acid level of 6 mg/dl or higher to reduce the blood uric acid level of the subject to less than 6 mg/dl. Therefore, the pharmaceutical composition according to the present invention exhibits an excellent effect on xanthine oxidase inhibitor and is administered to selected subjects to effectively treat or prevent cardiovascular disease.
