A cell transfer apparatus (S) is provided with: a base (1) on which a container (2) in which multiple cells (C) are to be contained is to be arranged; a head (61) having, attached thereto, a suction chip (12) for sucking the cells in the container (2); and a control unit (7) for controlling the head (61). The cells (C) are arranged on a mounting surface (31A) that corresponds to the upper surface of a underlaying culture medium layer (31) composed of a gel-like culture medium. The control unit (7) can acquire information about the height position of the mounting surface (31A), can determine a suction height for a cell present at a first position on the mounting surface (31A), and can suck the cell onto the suction chip (12). Subsequently, the control unit (7) allows a cell present at a second position on the mounting surface (31A), which is different from the first position, to be sucked onto the suction chip (12) by utilizing the suction height for the first position.
