The invention relates to an assembly and a method for tire building, wherein the assembly comprising a first drum (1) with a first circumferential surface for receiving a tire component (9), a retaining device (5) for retaining the tire component against the first circumferential surface and a second drum (2) with a second circumferential surface for receiving the tire component from the first drum (1), wherein the first drum (1) and the second drum (2) are positionable into a transfer orientation, wherein the assembly is arranged for transferring the retaining device (5) from the first drum (1) to the second drum (2) in the transfer orientation.
