The present invention relates to a composition for preventing and treating asthma, containing a benzofuran compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient, and the benzofuran compound of the present invention effectively inhibits airway hyperresponsiveness and the infiltration of inflammatory cells which are caused by asthma, regulates Th2 immune response so as to inhibit the generation of cytokines (interleukins-4, -5 and -13) secreted thereby, remarkably reduces the generation of blood serum IgE and ovalbumin-specific IgE, and significantly decreases inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and thus can be useful in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases including asthma or inflammatory lung diseases.
