L'invention se rapporte à de nouvelles souches de protistes appartenant au genre Schizochytrium permettant une production à haut rendement de lipides et de caroténoïdes, notamment d'acide docosahexaénoïque (DHA) et d'astaxanthine, en mode mixotrophe, ainsi qu'à un procédé de sélection et de culture de telles souches, utilisant un apport de lumière variable et/ou discontinu, notamment sous forme de flashs.
