PIPE INSTALLATION SYSTEM AND METHOD

A system is used with pipe laying equipment to install underground pipe in a trench without needing personnel in the trench to assist the equipment operator. A hollow mandrel is connected to the boom end of an earth moving machine, such as an excavator through a power rotator which serves to pivot the mandrel in a horizontal plane. A pivotal connection between the mandrel and the boom permits the boom to move the mandrel in an axial direction as a section of pipe is manipulated into coupling engagement with another section, and to withdraw the mandrel from the pipe after installation. A camera, target and a laser beam are used to align the mandrel and a section of pipe with another pipe section as the two sections are aligned and joined together by remote operation of the system.
