The laevo-rotatory (-) isomer of the compound of formula (I) is a valuable prostaglandin intermediate. La présente invention concerne la séparation des isomères optiques de l'hexahydro-5-hydroxy-4-(hydroxyméthyl)-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-2-one ("lactone de Corey") racémique de formule (I) par chromatographie liquide. L'isomère lévogyre (-) du composé de formule (I) est un intermédiaire de prostaglandine utile.
