APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR ADVANCING COOLING CATHETER

A cooling catheter (12) is advanced through the femoral vein of a patient into the vena cava for therapeutic or prophylactic cooling of a patient by first sliding a peel away protector sheath (18) down the catheter (12) until it covers, and constrains a distal heat exchange element (14), such as plural hollow fibers through which coolant flows. An introducer sheath (24) is advanced into the femoral vein, and then the protector sheath (18) with heat exchange element (14) therein is advanced into the introducer sheath (24). The protector sheath (18) is then peeled away, and removed from the catheter (12), and the catheter (12) can be advanced as desired through the introducer sheath (24). When desired, the introducer sheath (24) can be removed from the patient by peeling away the sheath (24) from the catheter (12). L'invention porte sur un cathéter de refroidissement qu'on fait avancer dans la veine fémorale d'un patient pour l'introduire dans la veine cave afin de procéder à un refroidissement thérapeutique ou prophylactique du patient. Pour cela, on fait coulisser une faine de protection détachable vers le bas du cathéter jusqu'à ce qu'elle recouvre et resserre un élément distal d'échange thermique tel qu'une pluralité de fibres creuses par lesquelles s'écoule le milieu de refroidissement. On fait avancer une gaine d'introduction dans la veine fémorale, gaine dans laquelle on fait ensuite avancer la gaine de protection dotée de l'élément d'échange thermique. On détache ensuite la gaine de protection pour la retirer du cathéter, et on fait avancer le cathéter, comme souhaité, dans la gaine d'introduction. Il est également possible de retirer la gaine d'introduction du patient en la détachant du cathéter.
