The use of diamond-like carbon as an abrasion resistant barrier coating to inhibit the leaching of toxic components from an orthodontic device into the mouth of a user. An orthodontic device comprising means for attaching the device to a user's teeth and a tensioning element in contact with said means wherein at least one of said means and said tensioning element has a surface finish of from RA=0.01 mu m to RA=0.5 mu m. L'invention concerne l'utilisation d'un dépôt CDA en tant que barrière résistante à l'abrasion afin de limiter le lessivage de composants toxiques depuis un dispositif orthodontique dans la bouche d'un patient, ainsi qu'un dispositif orthodontique comprenant un système de fixation dudit dispositif aux dents du patient et un élément de tensionnement en contact avec ce dispositif, au moins un de ces systèmes et l'élément de tensionnement possédant une finition de surface entre RA=0,01 mu m et RA=0,5 mu m.
