The novel phosphonium and imidazolium compounds are useful as polar solvents and have the general formula (I): Q+X- wherein Q+ is formula (a) or formula (b); and X- is formula (c), formula (d) or formula (e); and wherein: each of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R9, R10, R11, R12, and R13 is independently a hydrocarbyl group; each of R6, R7, and R8 is independently a hydrogen or hydrocarbyl group.
