Date Apr. 30, 1998A control device for an optical sensor including an optical transmitter is used to prolong the service life of the optical transmitter, preferably a light-emitting diode, and to adjust the service life of the electronic components and, thus, prolong the service life of the optical sensor. This is achieved in that the transmitter power is able to be switched over between full power and reduced power as a function of a measuring value from the sensor.
