Zusammenfassung:	Paper having a improved softness is obtained by adding to the fiber suspension from which the paper is made, a quaternized fatty acid trialkanolamine ester salt of the formula (I) (I) in which R1CO represents an acyl radical having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, R2 and R3, independently of one another, represent hydrogen or R1CO, (ALK) is ethyl or propyl, R4 represents an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a (CH2CH2O)qH group, the sum of m, n and p represents O or numbers from 1 to 12, q represents numbers from 1 to 12 and X represents halide, alkylsulfate or alkylphosphate.
