The resultant discontinuous carbide network in the grain boundaries inhibits stress corrosion crack growth in polythionic acid environments. Alloy 617 generally comprises 20-24% Cr, 9.5-20% Co, 7-12% Mo, 0.8-1.5 Al, and less than 0.15% carbon, the balance being iron.
