In particular, this invention relates to 5-substituted-3-phenyl-imidazolidine-2, 4-diones of the formula I in which: p0 X is hydrogen or halogen; p0 R is selected from the group -R2 or =CH-R3; p0 R1 is methyl or ethyl; p0 R2 is C1-8alkyl, C1-8haloalkyl, C3-8cycloalkyl, C4-10 cycloalkylalkyl, phenyl, benzyl or substituted benzyl; and R3 is C1-8alkyl, C3-8cycloalkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, benzyl, substituted benzyl, styryl, or a heterocyclic group of 3 to 10 ring atoms.
