Zusammenfassung:	Chromatographic sorbents containing silica are cleaned by using a caustic wash solution having a caustic agent dissolved in water and having aluminum or gallium ions present at an effective concentration so as to prevent deterioration of the sorbent. Caustic solutions having a pH above 8 can be used with a preferred solution having a pH above 13. The cleaning solutions typically have aluminum or gallium ions present at a concentration of from about 0.0005 to 0.1 normal.
