Zusammenfassung:The present invention provides a process for the preparation of ethylene glycol and glycerine by a selective electrolysis that cleaves the carbon-carbon bonds of carbohydrate-derived polyols into two- and three-carbon units. The intermediate products can then be reduced to the desired ethylene glycol and glycerine products using standard reduction technology. The electrolysis is conducted in the presence of an electrolysis medium which contains manganese.
