In a tinless aluminium-based bearing alloy containing 2-8% by weight antimony, with the strengthening additions of copper and/or nickel and/or chromium and/or titanium in the range 0.2- 3.0% total, the addition of 0.005-0.5% total by weight of one or more element from the group S, Se, Te, P and As modifies the coarse primary Al Sb phase particles into regular polyhedra and significantly improves the workability and mechanical properties of the unmodified alloy. The alloy is used in the steel-backed form in highly stressed automative and Diesel applications.
