BARDINA 4 July 1973 31780/73 Heading B3F A mandrel 1 has a bore 12 containing a pipe 13 (for feeding coolant through openings 14 into the hollow 6 which it produces in a continuous casting) and has longitudinal ducts 8 for circulation of coolant into and out of the mandrel, there being longitudinal grooves 16 on the mandrel, into which a gas/liquid mixture, arising from coolant fed into the casting hollow 6, can be drawn, e.g. by vacuum applied to the mandrel bore 12, and passed to the bore through passages 18. Alternating with the grooves 16 in the metallic mandrel are narrower grooves 19 connected by passages 20 to the ducts 8, for further coolant flow into the casting hollow. The mandrel 1 has an oscillating rotary motion about its axis through an angle equal to that between adjacent grooves 16.
