1390823 Haloethyl esters of carboxylic containing benzene rings CIBA-GEIGY 30 March 1972 [1 April 1971] 15138/72 H ing C2C The invention comprises compounds formula wherein R 1 is H, halogen, unsubstituted C 1-4 alkyl or fluoro or chloro substituted C 1 or C 2 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, NO 2 , or group R 4 COO in which R 4 is unsubstituted or halosubstituted alkyl or an optionally substituted phenyl group; R 2 is H, halogen, C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy; R 3 is H or C 1-4 alkoxy; A is methylene, vinylene or lower oxyalkylene, and m is 1 or 0. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of formula with a compound of formula in which Y and Z are both OH or one is halogen . and the other is OH or OMe where Me is a mobile metal cation which may be split off. The reaction may be performed in a solvent which is inert to reactants and products and if Z = Y = OH or one = OH and the other halogen a catalyst may be employed.
