Zusammenfassung:	An illustrative embodiment of the invention includes improved nuclear well logging methods and apparatus for investigating subsurface earth formations. A pulsed neutron generator is used to irradiate the earth formations and the gamma rays caused by the inelastically scattered neutrons are observed in four energy windows. The carbon/oxygen ratio and the silicon/calcium ratio and the counting rate in each window are obtained and used to resolve ambiguities in the oil/water content of the formations by appropriately combining the measurements to obtain the lime factor or fraction and the water saturation SW of the formations, which quantities are then recorded as a function of the borehole depth.
