It may be obtained by (a) polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of elemental halogen or an acid polyhalide and of a Lewis acid catalyst, to form an #, #1-dihalopolymer, (b) reacting this product with ammonia, an amine or other aminating agent to form a corresponding #, #1-diamino polymer, optionally with further treatment with a dicarboxylic acid to form an #,#1-diammonium carboxylate polymer, and (c) reacting this product with polycondensable materials which may be monomeric materials (an aminoacid or suitable derivative thereof, or a combination of a dicarboxylic acid and a diamine, or suitable derivatives thereof), or preformed polyamides with appropriate end-groups. In examples, (a) styrene and α-methylstyrene were each homopolymerized in bulk or in methylene chloride in the presence of, as halogenating agent, thionyl chloride, and, as catalyst, aluminium chloride, tin tetrachloride, or ferric chloride, (b) the products reacted with liquid ammonia, optionally followed by adipic acid, and (c) the diaminopolymers or their adipic acid salts are polymerized with #-amino-n-caproic acid, 11-aminon - undec - anoic acid, adipic acid - hexamethylene - diamine salt, or m - xylenediamineadipic acid salt.
