Butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, octatriene and methyl heptatriene may be used and the reaction may be in an inert solvent or in excess diene. Complex cyclooctenyl cobalt cyclooctadiene and cyclooctenyl cobalt cyclooctadiene-ethylene, propene or butene may be used as the catalyst. Examples 10 and 11 describe the reaction of butadiene with ethylene to give hexadienes.
