Zusammenfassung:	In a method of detecting a surface defect of a moving body deposited with non-uniformly distributed oil films wherein the surface of the moving body is scanned with light, the light reflected by the surface is converted into an electrical signal, and the electrical signal exceeding a predetermined level is derived out as a defect signal the improvement wherein, a scanning light of a wavelength having a high transmissibility for the oil film is formed, a uniform film of the oil is applied on the surface of the moving body, and the surface coated with the uniform thickness of oil film is scanned with the high transmissibility scanning light.
