1295192 Hot-blast stoves KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE HOOGOVENS EN STAALFABRIEKEN NV 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 23039/71 Heading F4K In a hot blast stove comprising a vertical cylindrical refractory structure 1 closed by a dome 5 of refractory material, the dome is supported on the structure 1 by means of a series of closely spaced columns 14 whose upper and lower edges are shaped and arranged to permit pivotal movement to take place to accommodate expansion at high operating temperatures and thereby prevent crack formation in the dome. The top part of the vertical structure 1 is provided with vertical expansion joints or slots 17. The dome consists of a part 12 having the shape of a segment of a sphere merging into a part 13 having a greater radius of curvature. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the columns (26) are received adjacent the top of the vertical structure of the stove in blocks (25) which are supported by an outwardly flaring part (23) of a surrounding steel jacket which in turn is supported by a row of steel brackets or struts (24) around the outside of the stove.
