Dodecanedioic acid-1,12 is prepared by epoxidizing 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene to 1,2- epoxy - 5,9 - cyclododecadiene, hydrogenating to form cyclododecene epoxide and oxidizing with nitric acid to form the acid. The epoxidation may be in the presence of alkyl or aralkyl hydroperoxide with a catalyst such as molybdenum, tungsten or titanium, and the hydrogenation may be in the presence of a platinum, palladium or nickel catalyst. The oxidation may be with nitric acid of from 30-70% strength with a catalyst such as a copper, vanadium or manganese salt.
