Novel compounds of the formula where X is an alkyl or mercaptoalkyl radical or an electronegative substituent (e.g. F, Cl, Br, I, NO 2 , CN or CF 3 ), Y is -(CH 2 ) n - -CH = CH-, O or S, A is N or CH, m is 0, 1 or 2, and n is 0, 1 or 2, and their salts, are obtained by reacting a compound of the formula where Z is Cl or Br, optionally in the presence of an acid acceptor, with at least the theoretically required amount of imidazole in a polar organic solvent at 20‹ to 120‹ C. A compound of Formula (II) in which Z is OH may be used as starting material and may be reacted with a halogenating agent to convert Z to Cl or Br. Pharmaceutical compositions, having good fungistatic action against human-pathogenic fungi, and activity against pathogenic protozoa, viruses and bacteria, comprise compounds of Formula (I) or their pharmaceutically acceptable salts in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or topical administration.
