[Also in Division A5] Compounds of the general formula (Ar = Ph substituted by at least one nitro group and optionally substituted in addition by at least one halogen atom or at least one C 1-6 alkyl group; R 1 = C 1-4 alkyl; R 2 = H or C 1-4 alkyl) and their acid addition salts are prepared by (a) reacting with R 1 R 2 CO in the presence of a strong acid or (b) reacting a compound of the formula (B = OH) or a reactive derivative with ArCH 2 OH or a reactive derivative, optionally followed in either case by salt formation. The preparation of 3-nitrobenzyl bromide is described.
