A divan base comprises a rectangular base frame formed by opposed sides 1, 2 and ends 3, 4, wooden cross-members 5 spanning the sides 1, 2, the sides 1, 2, ends 3, 4 and cross-members 5 being of rectangular cross-section with the major cross-section dimension extending vertically, and a plurality of conical, coil springs 6 or 8 mounted on and attached to the cross-members 5, the upper coils of the springs being inter-connected so that the cross-members 5 and springs form a subassembly separate from the base frame, and the arrangement being such that in the assembled condition the depth of the springs 6 when not subjected to external loading is not greater than half the overall depth of the base as measured from the top of the springs 6 to the bottom of the base frame. The upper ends of the coil springs 6, 8 may be inter-connected by helical springs 9, crossings wires 10, 12, links 13 or helical wires 23. Border springs are clipped to a border wire 14. Padding and cover layers 17, 18 overlie the springs 6, 8. |
