Trioxan is copolymerized with a cyclic acetal or linear formal in the presence of a solution of aqueous perchloric acid in an aliphatic or cyclic ether at a temperature between the melting and boiling points of the monomer mixture. Optional termonomers are bis- (alkanetriol)-triformals, polyethylene oxides, and prepolymers of molecular weight from 176 to 2000, which are obtained from 1 mole of a 1,2,-(5-11)-triol, 0 to 1 mole of an alpha, omegarliol of a molecular weight from 62 to 100, 0 to 1 mole of a monohydric acohol with from 1 to 11 carbon atoms and 1 mole of formaldehyde per 2 equivalents of hydroxy groups in the mixture. Suitable ethers are mono- and -diethylene glycol dimethyl ethers, 1,4-dioxan and tetrahydrofuran. In examples, trioxan is copolymerized in bulk with 1,3-dioxolan, 1,4- butane-, 1,6-hexane- and 1,2-propane-diol formals, and polyethyleneoxide of molecular weight 10,000.
