Novel compounds (I) in which R is an aromatic, heterocyclic or bicyclic fused aromatic/heterocyclic radical which radical may be alkylated are produced by reaction of an aldehyde R-CHO with 4- methylthio-m-cresol. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound (I) together with a suitable carrier and are useful as laxatives. They can be administered orally or rectally.
