The invention comprises mono- and disazo dyestuffs containing neither metal complexforming groups nor water-solubilizing substituents which dissociate to form acid in water and having the general formula wherein A is an aryl or aromatic heterocyclic radical which may contain substituents and/or arylazo groups, and Y is CN, lower alkoxycarbonyl or -CON(R 1 )R 2 , where R 1 is H or lower alkyl and R 2 is H, lower alkyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, lower hydroxyalkyl, lower alkoxy lower alkyl, lower alkanoyloxy-lower alkyl, phenyl, lower alkyl phenyl or halogenophenyl and benzene ring B can contain further substituent atoms or groups other than metal complex-forming groups. The word " lower " means C 1 -C 4 . Preferably (a) Y is CN and ring B is not further substituted, (b) A is a pacylaminophenyl group, or (c) a 4-phenylazophenyl radical. They are prepared by diazotizing an amine A-NH 2 and coupling to the corresponding coupling component. The dyes give yellow and yellow-orange shades on hydrophobic organic fibres, e.g. polyglycol terephthalate and cellulose 2¢ and tri-acetates.
