An abrasive scouring cleanser composition in the form of a dry powder comprises at least 60% of a water-insoluble inorganic siliceous abrasive material having a particle size of less than 0.5 mm., 0À1-20% of a dry watersoluble component, which liberates hypochlorite ions on contact with water, 0À5-15% of a water-soluble organic detergent stable in the presence of the hypochlorite-liberating agent and 0À1-10% of a water-soluble inorganic bromide. Suitable hypochlorite-liberating compounds are N-chloroimides (e.g. chlorocyanuric acids and their salts, N-chlorosuccinimide, N-chlorohydantoins), chloramine complexes, inorganic hypochlorites and chlorinated trisodiumphosphate (i.e. the reaction product of trisodium phosphate and an alkali metal hypoehlorite) or a mixture of an alkali metal monopersulphate and an alkali metal chloride. Suitable bromides are sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium and strontium bromides. The abrasive material may be silica, feldspar, pumice, volcanic ash, diatomaceous earth, bentonite, talc or mixtures thereof. The organic detergent may be anionic, cationic, non-ionic or amphoteric and examples of each class are given. The cleanser composition may contain additional ingredients such as inorganic builder salts, sequestering agents (e.g. nitrilotriacetic acid, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid and their salts), fillers (e.g. wood pulp, sawdust, magnesite or whiting), sodium carboxymethylcellulose, anti-caking agents and optical brighteners.
