Novel 1 - substituted - 5 - aminotetrazoles of the general formula wherein R is a monobromo-, monofluoro-, dichloro- or monomethyl-phenyl or monomethylbenzyl group, and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof are prepared by reaction of a thiourea of the general formula RNHCSNH 2 with an alkyl halide of the general formula R 1 X, wherein R 1 is a methyl or ethyl group and X is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, reaction of the resulting S-alkylisothiourea hydrohalide of the general formula RNHC(SR 1 ) = NH.HX with hydrazine and reaction of the resulting 4-aminoguanidine hydrohalide of the general formula RNHC( = NH)NHNH 2 .HX with nitrous acid, followed optionally by salification of the product.
