PROCESS FOR PREPARING AROMATIC ISOTHIOCYANATES FROM AROMATIC NITRO COMPOUNDS

A process for preparing aromatic isothiocyanates comprises reacting: (a) a sulphurcontaining compound selected from carbon disulphide, carbonyl sulphide, and mixtures of carbon disulphide and carbonyl sulphide; (b) an aromatic nitrogen-containing compound selected from an aromatic nitro compound, an aromatic nitroso compound, an aromatic azo compound, an aromatic azoxy compound and mixtures thereof, and (c) potassium hydrosulphide, and recovering the aromatic isothiocyanate produced thereby. Using this process phenylisothiocyanate is prepared in the examples.
