Zusammenfassung:1,225,370. Organopolysiloxanes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 19 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18603/68. Heading C3T. A siloxane contains 1 to 100 mol. per cent of units of the formula wherein M is a cation, R is H or an alkyl radical of 1 to 18 C atoms, R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon (h.c.) of 1 to 18 C atoms and free of aliphatic unsaturation, a, b = 2 to 4, c = 1 to 100, x=0 or 1, y=0, 1 or 2 and d= 1 to 4, and 0 to 99 mol. per cent of units, wherein Z is H or a monovalent h.c. radical of 1 to 18 C atoms and free of aliphatic unsaturation, or a monovalent radical of the formula DO(C e H 2e O) s (OC) l C f H 2f -, wherein D is H or an alkyl, acyl or aryl group of up to 18 C atoms, (OC) is carbonyl, e=2 to 4, f= 2 to 4, t=0 or 1, s=1 to 100 and z=0 to 3. They can be made in known manner by the addition of the requisite hydrosiloxane to a sulphonate of an alkenyl polyether, in the presence of a Pt catalyst and, if desired, an organic solvent. Siloxanes having Na as the cation, can be converted into siloxanes having other cations by known mathematical reactions using the chlorides of other cations and solvents, e.g. toluene or ether, in which NaCl is insoluble and precipitates out. Cation exchange resins can also be used to effect replacement of cations with other cations. In a typical example (1) a toluene solution of a sulphonate of the formula CH 2 = CH.CH 2 (OC 2 H 4 ) 19 (OC 3 H 6 ) 14 OC 3 H 6 SO 3 Na was reacted with a toluene solution of Me 3 SiO- (Me 2 SiO) 20 (MeHSiO 3À2 -SiMe 3 in the presence of H 2 PtCl 6 at 75‹ C. to yield, after removal of solvent, a water-soluble semi-solid product of the desired copolymer, which was used in Example 6 for emulsifying a dimethylsiloxane oil. Uses.-As wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents and detergents; aqueous solutions of the siloxanes are used as treating baths in the textile industry for wetting substrates of polyethylene, cotton, synthetic fibres etc.; in making emulsions for use as polishes and waxes for floors, cars and furniture; the aqueous solutions can also contain other water-miscible solvents, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol and t-butanol.
