A direct positive dye image is obtained by imagewise exposing a silver halide emulsion layer developing it to less than maximum density with an aqueous solution of a leuco dye and then treating with an aqueous solution of a hydrohalic acid containing dissolving oxygen with or without additional oxidising agents e. g. quinone. The leuco dye may be the leuco form of methylene blue, crystal violet, methyl violet or basic fuchsin. The developed material may be heated to 70 to 80‹ C. to strengthen the image and fixed in thiourea solution.
