OIL SOLUBLE OXIDIZED NAPHTHYLAMINE COMPOSITIONS

Antioxidants for lubricating oils and greases are compositions obtained by oxidatively polymerizing compounds of formula or their mixtures with a diphenylamine, wherein Ar is optionally substituted Ph or C10H7, R and R1 are C1- 20 alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkoxy or aroxy, and m and n are 0 or...

Beschreibung
Zusammenfassung:Antioxidants for lubricating oils and greases are compositions obtained by oxidatively polymerizing compounds of formula or their mixtures with a diphenylamine, wherein Ar is optionally substituted Ph or C10H7, R and R1 are C1- 20 alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkoxy or aroxy, and m and n are 0 or an integer. The antioxidants are mixtures containing dimers (e.g. hydrazines or diamines), trimers and -in some cases-dinaphthylamine. Base fluids may be hydrocarbon mineral oils, olefins, polyolefins, polyethers, polyacetals, poly (alkylene oxides), silicones and esters, e.g. di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate and esters of pentaerythritol (such as the pelargonate/valerate) and of trimethylolpropane.ALSO:The invention relates to compositions which are obtained by oxidatively polymerizing (e.g. dimerizing and trimerizing) compounds of formula or their mixtures with a diphenylamine, wherein Ar is optionally substituted Ph or C10H7, R and R1 are C1-20 alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkoxy or aroxy, and m and n are 0 or any interger up to the maximum available positions on the aromatic nuclei without hindering formation of the desired product. Suitable oxidizing agents are air, O2, KMnO4, PbO2, MnO2, H2O2, alkyl and aryl peroxides, and per acids. Examples describe the oxidation of 1-PhNH C10H7 (I), 2-PhNHC10H7 (II) and a II-Ph2NH mixture; the compound (2-PhNHC10 H6-1-)2 is isolated from the oxidation of II. In general, the Specification suggests that the dimers may be hydrazines (coupling through 2 N atoms) or diamines (coupling through 1 N atom and 1 nucleus, or 2 nuclei). (C10H7)2NH is mentioned as a constituent of the product from I. The above compositions may be used as antioxidants for esters, e.g. di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate and pentaerythritol pelargonate-valerate.
